Taunton Motors
High-fidelity optical and magnetic encoder integrations delivering closed-loop control to British technology innovators.
At Taunton Motors, we measure our success in micrometers and decibels. We understand that inside a premium robotic joint, a medical dosing pump, or a high-end smart lock, space is the ultimate luxury. Our mission is to pack maximum torque, unyielding durability, and near-silent acoustics into the most compact footprints imaginable.
Our expertise lies in the harmony of miniature engineering. From precision-wound rotors and high-purity copper commutators to custom-designed planetary gearheads, every component inside a Taunton Motors micro motor is optimized for low energy consumption and a friction-free lifespan. We constantly push the limits of micro-drive tech, utilizing advanced automated Swiss-style hobbing and Japanese dynamic balancing to ensure that our internal gear trains operate with zero-backlash precision. When the integrity of your high-tech device hangs on repeated mechanical perfection, Taunton Motors delivers the silent power that anchors your design.
As the United Kingdom accelerates its industrial shift post-Brexit, UK manufacturing is rapidly modernizing. Advanced robotics, laboratory instruments, defense applications, and smart home ecosystems are experiencing exponential growth in tech hubs across England, Scotland, and Wales. For these high-value markets, standard DC motors are no longer sufficient. Precision control requires precise feedback—making motors with encoders indispensable.
British engineers demand compliance with UKCA and CE standards. They require electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) to avoid radio frequency interference in crowded medical and aerospace environments. Furthermore, because design footprints continue to shrink, the integration of high-resolution magnetic or optical encoders into miniature footprints is a necessity. Taunton Motors bridges the gap for UK importers by providing customized shaft extensions, high-IP rating enclosures (ideal for humid British climates), and robust cables termination standards that directly plug into European and British PLC architectures.
In the global market, feedback-equipped motors are the backbones of smart factories. Common applications where Taunton Motors gear motors with encoders excel include:
Precise peristaltic dosing pumps, laboratory mixers, and surgical robotics where angular precision prevents clinical errors.
Grid-based automated guided vehicles used in high-density distribution centers (such as those in the Midlands and London outskirts).
Electronic locks, smart deadbolts, window actuators, and surveillance gimbal systems requiring long lifespan and high torque density.
Assembly line belt feeders, small CNC rotary axes, and custom actuators requiring dynamic velocity profiling.
Underpinning UK engineering with state-of-the-art Chinese supply chain and manufacturing efficiency.
Six stages of precision guarantees to ensure reliability in critical British medical and industrial installations.
We invest in Swiss-grade hobbing, EDM wire-cutting, and computerized windings to drive down tolerances.
Every design is validated in environmental and electromagnetic labs to ensure long-term, fail-safe performance.
Available with customizable gear ratios, voltage specifications (3V to 24V), and optical/magnetic encoders.
When selecting a motor with encoder for demanding British applications, engineers must carefully evaluate the feedback mechanism. At Taunton Motors, we offer both Magnetic (Hall Effect) and Optical encoder integrations, each customized to deliver specific performance profiles:
Magnetic encoders utilize a multi-pole magnetic wheel attached to the motor shaft and Hall-effect sensors. As the shaft rotates, the sensors detect transitions in the magnetic field, outputting square-wave pulses. These encoders are extremely robust, immune to ambient dust, moisture, and vibration. This makes them the default choice for UK industrial environments, offshore subsea applications, and automotive lock mechanisms. Our standard Hall encoder configurations typically provide 7 to 12 pulses per revolution (PPR) on the motor shaft, which multiplies exponentially depending on the gear ratio of the planetary or spur gearbox.
For applications demanding absolute, high-precision positioning (such as 3D printers, medical dosing valves, and robotic joints), optical encoders are superior. These devices feature a micro-slotted glass or plastic disc that interrupts an infrared beam. Optical encoders achieve much higher resolutions, sometimes delivering up to 4096 PPR (such as our 5v N20VA 4096ppr Encoder Micro Dc Gear Motor). Because they rely on light beams, they must be completely sealed to prevent ingress of dirt, which is a standard procedure in Taunton Motors’ cleanroom assembly lines.
We are observing a distinct trend in the UK towards fully integrated brushless and brushed DC systems. Rather than managing separate cabling for power and encoder feedback, design houses are opting for compact ribbon cable connectors that handle both drive voltage and TTL encoder outputs. This reduces installation errors, decreases assembly time on the factory floor, and reduces electromagnetic noise coupling over long cable runs.
